Loch a' Mheig

You'll find Loch a' Mheig tucked into the Highland landscape just a few miles south of Inverness, and it's the sort of quiet water that rewards those willing to leave the main road behind. This isn't Loch Ness - no tour boats, no crowds, just a genuine slice of Scottish loch life with moorland rising around it and decent views across to the hills beyond.

The nearest base is Inverness, which is close enough for a morning visit without faffing about. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Loch Ness Holiday Park or Loch Ness Shores both sit within five miles - it's absolutely worth a detour. Don't expect anything dramatic or Instagram-ready. What you get instead is the real thing: a Highland loch that feels genuinely remote despite being practically on Inverness's doorstep. Allow an hour, maybe two if you're in no rush.
