Loch a' Ghobhair

A remote loch tucked into the Highland landscape near Ardgay, Loch a' Ghobhair is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's small - we're talking a few hundred metres across - but it has that genuine Highlands feel: dark water, steep banks, and hardly another soul about. The loch sits in moorland that rises sharply on three sides, which means the light changes dramatically depending on weather and time of day. On a clear morning it's moody and still. When clouds roll in, it becomes genuinely atmospheric.

This is one for walkers and landscape photographers rather than families after a day out. There's no visitor infrastructure, no car park, no tearoom. You're essentially accessing it on foot from Ardgay, which adds to the appeal if you like a bit of solitude. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though the terrain can be boggy in places and it's not somewhere to bring young children expecting easy walking. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time and soaking it in.
