Loch a' Ghlinne Dhuirch

This remote loch sits tucked into the Highland landscape near Kyle of Lochalsh, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt down. The water is dark, moody, hemmed in by steep banks covered in gorse and heather - very Scottish, very quiet. There's no visitor infrastructure, no car park with an ice cream van, just the loch itself doing what it's done for centuries.

Walkers will find it worthwhile. The approach involves a proper walk from the nearest access points, which keeps the crowds away. If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping Skye just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day expedition when the midges aren't out for blood. The terrain is boggy in places and the weather can turn brutal without warning - bring proper boots and waterproofs, not trainers and optimism.

It's not a destination in itself. You won't spend hours here marvelling at the views, though they're pleasant enough. But as part of a larger Highland walking holiday, it works well. The nearest proper facilities are back in Kyle of Lochalsh, so plan accordingly. Photography types might find decent light here at dawn or dusk, particularly on rare clear days.

Family groups with young children should probably skip it unless they're genuinely keen walkers - there's nothing to do once you arrive except look at the water and head back. Solo travellers and serious hikers, though, will appreciate the isolation and the genuine sense of being away from the tourist trail.
