Loch a' Ghiubhais

The water here is properly dark - almost black in certain light - and ringed by Caledonian pine and birch that crowd right down to the shore. Loch a' Ghiubhais sits inland from Tain, quiet enough that you'll hear the occasional golden eagle overhead or red squirrel rustling through the branches. There's no visitor centre, no tearoom, no fuss whatsoever. What you get is a genuine Highland loch as it's existed for centuries, accessible by a short walk from the car park.

This appeals most to walkers and wildlife enthusiasts willing to swap manicured paths for the real thing. Birdwatchers especially rate it - the surrounding woodland draws serious numbers of species. Kids under eight might find it a bit thin on activities, though older children who can handle a decent walk will enjoy spotting wildlife and the slight sense of discovery.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the circuit, longer if you're photographing or birding. The going can be boggy in wet weather, so proper footwear matters. Admission is free and there's a small car park.

If you're based at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park or Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or late afternoon stop - it's close enough for a proper outing without the drive. Best visited spring through autumn when the midges aren't too savage and the light lingers.
