Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle

The stones stand in a rough circle on a hillside near Inverurie, weathered granite slabs that have been watching over Aberdeenshire for something like 4,500 years. Loanhead of Daviot is one of those Bronze Age circles you can actually walk right up to without barriers or visitor centres getting in the way - just you, the stones, and whatever the Scottish weather decides to throw at you that day.

It's not massive or dramatic. The circle measures about 70 feet across, and while some of the stones have toppled over time, enough remain upright to give you a real sense of what the ancients were doing here. There's also a cairn in the middle, which adds another layer to the mystery of the place. Archaeologists reckon this was a ceremonial site, though exactly what ceremonies happened here is the sort of question these stones will never answer.

Walkers get the most from this. The approach is straightforward enough - a short walk across farmland from the roadside - and the views across the Aberdeenshire landscape are genuinely worth the trip on a clear day. History enthusiasts will spend time circling the stones, examining the carvings and trying to imagine the people who raised them. Kids might find it a bit abstract for more than fifteen minutes unless you're really into stone circles.

It's free and accessible year-round, which is typical for Scottish archaeological sites.
