Hill of Blairbowie

The walk up Hill of Blairbowie near Inverurie rewards you with proper panoramic views across Aberdeenshire - assuming the weather cooperates, which in the Scottish Highlands is never a guarantee. The summit's not exactly Alpine, but at around 1,000 feet it gives you enough elevation to see across farmland and forest stretching toward the Cairngorms on a clear day.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble, making it accessible for families with decent legs and anyone after a brisk couple of hours outdoors. The path itself is well-trodden and doesn't require specialist gear, though you'll want proper boots because the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain. Allow two to three hours return from Inverurie if you're not rushing.

Seriously committed walkers might combine this with other summits in the area for a longer day, but day-trippers and those based at Hillhead Caravan Park (just five miles away) will find it a solid afternoon outing. Glamping Bothie is even closer at 5.5 miles, so perfectly doable if you fancy a walk before dinner.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. No visitor centre, no café, no facilities at the top. That's partly the appeal: you're getting pure Scottish countryside without the commercial coating. Go early on weekends to avoid the car park shuffle near the trailhead, and take waterproofs regardless of the forecast.
