Llyn Taliaris

The water here is properly still. Llyn Taliaris sits in the Carmarthenshire countryside like someone's left a giant mirror on the hills - dark, reflective, and surprisingly peaceful for a reservoir. You'll find it near Rhyd-Ar-Wen, which isn't much more than a scatter of farms and lanes, but that's rather the point.

It's a straightforward walk around the water, nothing technical, nothing that'll knacker you. The circuit takes a couple of hours if you amble and stop to look at things. The woodland wraps around one side, and you get decent views across the water to the surrounding ridges. On a grey day - and there are plenty of those in South Wales - the whole thing has a moody, atmospheric quality. Worth going on a clear day though, when the reflections actually give you something to look at.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination that'll keep the kids endlessly entertained unless they're the sort that enjoy a straightforward ramble and spotting birds. Photography types might find something here too, particularly if light's doing interesting things.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is fine - just turn up and walk. Free, needless to say. It's the sort of place you'd slot in during a week at Glynmarch Farm Camping, just down the road, when you fancy something low-key that doesn't require planning or queuing. Not dramatic or showy, but genuinely restful.
