Llyn Irddyn Tumulus

A Bronze Age burial mound sits alone in the Gwynedd landscape near Talybont, surrounded by nothing much but grass, sky, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how old this place really is. Llyn Irddyn Tumulus is modest - you won't spend hours here - but it's the sort of stop that justifies a detour if you're already walking the area.

What you get is a chance to stand where someone was buried thousands of years ago, no visitor centre faffing about, no crowds. The mound itself is low and rounded, easily climbable, and from the top you can see across decent countryside. It's the kind of thing that appeals more to archaeology types and curious walkers than to families wanting a day out - kids will likely find it underwhelming after five minutes.

Access appears to be free and there's no formal opening hours, which means you can visit whenever suits, though the site isn't signposted like a proper attraction. Allow 20 minutes maximum for the mound itself, longer if you're into the Bronze Age and want to linger. The real value comes from pairing it with walking routes in the area.

If you're staying at Hendre Mynach or Shell Island - both solid parks within a few miles - this works as a quick morning walk before heading elsewhere. Shell Island in particular gives you a proper base for exploring this part of Gwynedd. The tumulus feels like a bonus rather than a destination on its own.
