Lloyd Park

Lloyd Park sits just east of London, a proper working nature reserve where you'll actually see wildlife rather than manicured lawns pretending to be nature. The park centres on a lake that attracts herons, grebes, and if you're lucky, the occasional kingfisher darting past the reeds. There's a visitor centre, walking trails looping around the wetland areas, and enough quiet corners to lose an afternoon without hearing traffic.

It's the sort of place that rewards patience. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it - bring binoculars and you'll spot things most visitors miss. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in, though the open spaces are decent for letting them run about. The trails are mostly flat and accessible, which is handy if anyone in your group isn't keen on steep climbs.

Admission is free, which removes any guilt about a shorter visit if the weather turns. Summer's busier and the light's better for photography in early morning or late afternoon. Winter brings different birds and fewer crowds - pick your preference.

If you're camping at Lee Valley Campsite in Sewardstone (about 4 miles away) or one of the other parks nearby, Lloyd Park makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. It's close enough to London attractions that you don't feel stranded, but far enough out that it genuinely feels like you've stepped away. Not dramatic or showy, but reliable.
