Slate mines carved straight into the mountainside - that's what you're looking at when you reach Llechwedd near Blaenau Ffestiniog. This isn't some polished visitor attraction with gift shops and cafés. It's the real deal: enormous caverns gouged out over generations by men working in conditions that would make you wince just thinking about it.

You descend into the depths on a steep incline railway that feels genuinely precarious, then walk through caverns so vast your voice echoes back at you. The engineering that went into this is staggering - the sheer scale makes you understand why Welsh slate roofed half the world's Victorian buildings. Kids find it unsettling in the best way; there's something properly eerie about being this deep underground with nothing but lamplight picking out the rock walls.

Allow a good two to three hours if you want to do both the deep mine tour and the surface tramway properly. It's not free - you'll pay entry - and it's worth budgeting for, especially if you're visiting with school-age children who study industrial history. The walking involved is considerable and some sections are steep, so it's not ideal for very young ones or anyone with mobility issues.

Stay at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd, just a fifteen-minute walk away, and you've got a brilliant base for exploring this corner of Snowdonia. The mines run most of the year, though opening times shift seasonally, so check before you go.
