Littleport Village Sign

The village sign in Littleport is one of those things you spot from the car and either stop for or breeze past without thinking much about it. I stopped. What struck me straightaway was the craftsmanship - these aren't mass-produced plaques, they're proper pieces of local art that actually tell you something about where you've landed.

Littleport sits just east of Ely, and like most Cambridgeshire villages, it's got layers of history tucked beneath the ordinary-looking high street. The sign itself is a gallery of sorts - a visual record of what the place means to the people who live here. It's the kind of thing that makes sense only when you're standing there looking at it, trying to work out which bit represents what.

You won't spend hours here. Genuinely, five minutes is plenty. But if you're already in the area - say, stopping at Hatters Meadows or Heatherbield Lodge for a caravan holiday - it's worth the detour from the main road. Ely itself, with its cathedral and tighter sense of history, is the real draw in this corner of Cambridgeshire, but Littleport offers that quieter village character without the crowds.

Families with young kids might lose interest quickly unless you make it a proper treasure hunt - spot the sign, have a poke around the village, grab something from the local shop. For architecture or local history types, though, these village signs are genuinely interesting documents of how communities see themselves. It's free, obviously, and there's no admission barrier whatsoever.
