Prickwillow Engine Museum

There's something quietly compelling about watching a massive steam engine come to life, and Prickwillow - just outside Ely - does exactly that. This isn't some polished heritage attraction with gift shops on every corner. It's a working museum where volunteers actually maintain and operate vintage engines that once powered the Fenland drainage systems. You'll see beam engines, pumping stations, and the sort of industrial machinery that kept water out of the flatlands for generations.

The museum works best for people who genuinely care about engineering or have kids old enough to appreciate moving machinery rather than static displays. Toddlers will struggle unless you're lucky enough to catch an operating day. The site itself is fairly compact - allow ninety minutes to two hours, more if there's a steam day on. Check ahead because opening is seasonal and depends on volunteer availability.

It's free to visit, which is excellent value given the restored engines and the sheer technical knowledge on display. The nearest proper town is Ely, about five miles away, where you'll find cafés and facilities. If you're basing yourself at one of the local parks - Hatters Meadows is particularly close at just a mile and a half - Prickwillow makes a solid half-day excursion. Pair it with a walk along the Fen waterways or a visit into Ely itself and you've got a decent day sorted. Don't expect crowds. That's precisely the appeal.
