Little White Hill

The walk up Little White Hill takes about forty minutes from Castle Douglas, and on a clear day you get proper views across Dumfries and Galloway that justify the effort. It's not high - only 230 metres or so - but the climb is steeper than you'd expect, which means most people turn back halfway. Those who push on find themselves on grassland with the Lowlands spreading out below.

It's a solid choice if you're camping at Loch Ken Holiday Park or Galloway Glamping and want a quick outing that doesn't demand serious kit. Families with kids aged seven and up will manage it fine; younger children might find the gradient a slog. Walkers after a proper hill slog won't be impressed - you're done and back in under two hours. History types won't find much to grab onto here, but on weekends when the caravan parks are full, it's a good way to burn off cabin fever.

The path can be muddy in places, so waterproof boots matter. Parking is rough ground near the base - nothing official, just pull in sensibly. There's no café or visitor facilities, so bring water. The best time is morning when the light's fresh and you won't be queuing to stand on top with twenty other people.

If you're staying at Mollance Farm Caravan Park down towards New Galloway, it's a bit too far for a casual morning walk. But from Castle Douglas itself, Little White Hill fills a two-hour gap nicely before heading somewhere more substantial.
