Little Tor Hill

The walk up Little Tor Hill takes about twenty minutes from Dursley, and it's exactly the sort of short, sharp climb that rewards you out of all proportion to the effort. You get proper views across the Severn Vale from the top - nothing dramatic, but pleasant rolling countryside that stretches quite far on a clear day. It's the sort of place where locals bring visitors to show off their patch, which tells you something.

The hill itself is bare and grassy, no complicated navigation required. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without complaint, and it's short enough that you won't hear much whinging. Walkers doing a longer loop round the area often include it as a quick addition rather than a destination in itself. There's a path that goes up from near Dursley - you won't need directions beyond "head for the high ground" once you're in the village.

It's free, naturally. Allow thirty minutes to an hour including the walk down. Morning light is better than afternoon if you're after photographs. The surrounding countryside works well with Pepper Pot Caravan Park or Wixoldbury Farm Glamping as a base - both are close enough that Little Tor makes a proper morning outing before breakfast, or a gentle evening stretch of the legs. In winter it can get muddy, so decent boots are worth bringing. On balance, it's a straightforward little hill that does what it says on the tin without pretension.
