Little Sparrow Copse

You'll know you've found the right spot when the road noise from Cranleigh fades and the trees start closing in overhead. Little Sparrow Copse is the sort of woodland that doesn't announce itself - no visitor centre, no car park with ice cream vans, just genuine Sussex forest where you can actually walk without bumping into school groups.

It's mixed woodland, mostly, with paths that wind through beech and oak. On a decent day the light filters through properly golden. The ground is soft underfoot, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on how wet it's been. There's something oddly peaceful about a small copse - big enough to feel like you've escaped, small enough that you won't spend three hours wandering in circles.

This works best for people who want a proper walk without the crowds. Kids will enjoy it if they're the exploring type rather than the "are we there yet" type - there's enough to poke around in without it being a major destination. Bring wellies in winter; the drainage isn't spectacular. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're slow or stopping often.

It's not a showstopper attraction you've travelled miles to see, but it's exactly the kind of local woodland walk that makes a holiday actually feel like a break. Free, informal, and genuinely nice.
