Little Solsbury Hill

The walk up Little Solsbury Hill takes twenty minutes, give or take, and the payoff is a proper 360-degree view across the Avon Valley from a hilltop that's barely 600 feet high. It's not dramatic, but it's genuine - Bath sits off to one side, and on a clear day you can trace the valley's folds stretching out toward the Cotswolds.

This isn't a destination attraction. It's a half-hour diversion if you're staying near Bath, and honestly, that's exactly what it should be. The rampart at the top is Iron Age, supposedly, though you'd be forgiven for missing it among the scrubby grass. Kids aged seven and up will manage the climb without complaint. Younger ones might get fed up before the summit.

Free, naturally. No facilities to speak of - bring water if it's warm. Go early morning or late afternoon in summer to dodge the lunch-hour crowds from the nearby holiday parks. CAMPWELL FARM is just 4.6 miles off, and Bath Mill Lodge Retreat closer still, so plenty of people tackle this while camped locally.

Worth it? Only if you're already in the area. The view itself is gentle rather than spectacular, and the walk is more functional than beautiful. But that's Bath's character - understated, walkable, never trying too hard. Pair it with a proper ramble around Bathampton or a longer trail, and it slots in nicely. Solo, you'll be done in under an hour.
