Little Roughting Linn

A waterfall tucked away in the Northumberland hills near Belford, Little Roughting Linn is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is precisely why it works. The water drops sharply over dark rock into a pool below, surrounded by steep valley sides that feel properly wild even though you're only minutes from civilization.

It's a short walk from the road, maybe ten minutes each way, making it ideal for families who want a bit of drama without committing to a full moorland hike. The path gets muddy in wet weather and the banks are slippery, so sensible footwear matters. There's something satisfying about seeing water moving with real force after heavy rain - it transforms from a modest trickle into something genuinely impressive.

Walkers on longer routes through the Cheviots often pass nearby and are pleasantly surprised by it. History buffs won't find much here beyond the geology, but photographers appreciate the light hitting the water at certain times of day. The spot works well as a half-hour detour when you're basing yourself at Riverside Wooler Holiday Park or Highburn House Caravan Park - both within six miles - rather than as a destination in itself.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted. Go after rain if you can. The surrounding moorland around Belford has proper walking, so combine it with a longer route rather than visiting alone.
