Little Knoll

Little Knoll is a modest hilltop just outside Warminster that gives you proper countryside views across Wiltshire without any faffing about. It's a proper walk rather than a stroll - depending on which approach you take from the town, you're looking at something between 45 minutes to an hour there and back - but the summit rewards you with sight lines stretching across the chalk downs towards Longleat in the distance.

The appeal here is straightforward. You get a sense of the landscape that the stately homes and estates around Warminster sit within. The walk itself is the thing - rolling fields, the occasional gate, nothing dramatic but genuinely pleasant. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a climb will find it worth doing. Younger children might grumble on the way up, but it's hardly Alpine.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - whether that's the Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Center Parcs Longleat Forest - Little Knoll makes a decent afternoon leg-stretcher that's close enough not to require a full expedition mentality. The Longleat estate itself is three and a half miles away, so you could combine this with a visit to the house or grounds if the weather turns.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of up here - bring water, wear proper shoes. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged, which in Wiltshire means timing matters. It's free, obvious enough to navigate, and worth the leg work if you like seeing how the land lies.
