Little Humblebee

Walking into Little Humblebee feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - the kind of place where you half expect to bump into a gamekeeper who'll tell you off for being there. It's a proper forest near Tewkesbury, all ancient trees and soft ground, the sort of spot that rewards a slow morning ramble rather than a quick tick-box visit.

The woodland itself isn't enormous, but that's rather the point. You won't find marked trails or interpretation boards here - it's just you, the trees, and whatever wildlife decides to show itself. Bluebells in spring would be lovely. Autumn's a different beast entirely, all gold and rust underfoot. It's the kind of place where families with young kids can let them loose without worrying about getting properly lost, though older children might find it a bit quiet after the first twenty minutes or so.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, none of that. Bring water and a decent pair of boots. Two to three hours is about right unless you're after a serious trek - the appeal is in the wandering rather than the destination. Worth noting: it sits roughly equidistant between Winchcombe and Bourton-on-the-Water, both solid camping spots if you're basing yourself in the area. Bourton-on-the-Water especially has proper amenities if you're not roughing it entirely.

It's free, as far as anyone can tell, and you can turn up whenever daylight permits. The main drawback? Once you've had your walk, there's not much else pulling you back unless you're genuinely after peace and quiet in a wood.
