Little Chalfont Nature Park

A proper woodland walk just outside Rickmansworth, Little Chalfont Nature Park is the sort of place you stumble upon and think, why isn't this rammed with people? It's a modest affair - nothing grandiose - but the trails through the trees are genuinely pleasant, especially if you've got kids who need to burn off energy without the theme-park crowds.

The park centres on a mix of woodland and open grassland, with paths that meander through without demanding proper hiking boots or navigation skills. You'll spot the usual suspects - birds, maybe a squirrel or two if you're lucky - and in spring the bluebells do their thing. It's the kind of place where a morning visit feels like you've actually stepped away, even though you're barely twenty minutes from the madness of the Chilterns commuter belt.

There's no grand entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense here, which is refreshing. Give yourself an hour to two hours depending on how keen you are on exploring every fork in the path. Families with younger children will find it manageable; walkers after something low-key will appreciate it doesn't pretend to be more than it is.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Highclere or Lights Camera Glamping are both close by - this makes a solid half-day break from site life. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a Buckinghamshire park holiday, it's well worth the short drive from Rickmansworth.
