Lingly Hill

The walk up Lingly Hill from Penrith is straightforward enough - nothing too technical, but the climb does bite harder than you'd expect for a fell that sits under 2,000 feet. What makes it worth the effort is the view north across the Eden Valley, proper expansive when the weather behaves. On a clear day you're looking towards the Lake District fells, and south towards Cross Fell and the Pennines. The summit itself is modest - just a cairn and fell-walker's views - but that's rather the point.

This one's ideal for walkers who want something achievable without needing ropes or a dawn start. Kids aged eight upwards should manage it fine if they're used to hills, though younger ones might find the push tedious. The path is mostly straightforward, and there's no scrambling to worry about. Allow two to three hours return depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. Free access, obviously, as with most Lake District and Pennine fells.

If you're staying at Howdy Glamping, Lingly Hill makes a logical half-day outing before heading to some of the bigger draws around Penrith. It's not going to thrill serious peak-baggers, but it's a cracking introduction to the fell if you're new to walking round here, and the crowds won't follow you the way they do on some of the more famous routes.
