Lincoln Eleanor Cross

The Eleanor Cross stands on a roundabout just south of Lincoln city centre, easy to spot if you know what you're looking for but easy to miss if you don't. It's a proper medieval monument - a stone cross built in the 1290s to mark where the funeral procession of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine stopped on its journey north. Edward I was grief-stricken enough to commission twelve of these crosses across England. Only three survive, which makes this one genuinely significant.

You can view it freely from the roadside, though getting a decent look requires a bit of care with traffic. The stonework is weathered but you can still make out the Gothic details if you stand there for five minutes. It's the sort of thing history enthusiasts will find genuinely moving - a tangible connection to medieval royal heartbreak, basically.

For families camping at Hartsholme Country Park just down the road, it's a quick stop rather than a destination in itself. Twenty minutes maximum, unless you're really into medieval monumental sculpture. The nearby parks - Langdale Lakes and Hanworth - are both within easy striking distance if you're based in the area for a week or so.

The real appeal is layering it into a Lincoln trip. Walk the cathedral, explore the castle ruins, then take a detour to see where history actually stopped passing through. It won't fill an afternoon alone, but it deserves an hour of your time if you're in the city anyway.
