Lincoln Baptist Church

The Baptist Chapel on Silver Street in Lincoln is one of those places you'd walk past without a second glance if you didn't know what you were looking at. But step inside and you're confronted with something genuinely moving - a Grade II listed building that's been a centre for nonconformist worship since 1760.

It's not grand in the way Lincoln Cathedral is grand. The interior is modest, almost austere, with exposed brick and simple wooden galleries that creak properly when you walk across them. The pulpit sits front and centre, exactly as it would have done three centuries ago, and there's real atmosphere in that straightforwardness. You can spend fifteen minutes absorbing the place, or longer if the caretaker's about and willing to chat through the history.

This one appeals most to people interested in religious heritage and the nonconformist movement rather than casual tourists. If you're into Georgian architecture or local history, it's worth the short walk from Lincoln city centre. Check ahead for visiting times - it's not always open to visitors, which can be frustrating.
