Linch Down

The walk up Linch Down rewards you with one of those Sussex views that makes you understand why people move down here and never leave. It's not a dramatic peak - this is South Downs territory, all gentle rolling chalk slopes rather than Alpine drama - but the effort is modest and the 360-degree payoff is genuine.

On a clear day you can pick out the coastal plain stretching south toward Chichester and beyond. The surrounding hills roll away in waves, patchwork fields and woodland creating that quintessential South Downs pattern. It's the kind of landscape that photographs better than it looks in person, which is rare, and feels properly unspoiled.

The climb itself is straightforward. Come from the Bow Hill Farm side and you're looking at a pleasant walk rather than a slog - accessible enough for older kids and less experienced walkers, but substantial enough to feel like an achievement. Allow an hour return trip if you're stopping for the view. Spring is lovely when the chalk grassland comes alive, but honestly any time the weather cooperates works fine.

This fits nicely into a broader South Downs walking break. Bow Hill Farm caravan site sits just 2.5 miles away, making it a natural base - you could knock out Linch Down as a morning walk before exploring further west toward the Weald or east toward the Cuckmere. The walk itself is free, as is the view, which doesn't hurt.
