Linacre Middle Reservoir

The walk around Linacre Middle Reservoir, just outside Chesterfield, is one of those genuinely rewarding afternoons that costs nothing and requires barely any planning. You'll find a proper circuit of about two miles that takes you round the water's edge, with enough woodland and open stretches to keep things visually interesting without ever feeling like hard graft.

It's a working reservoir, so there's real activity on the water if you time it right - fishermen casting from the banks, the occasional heron picking its way through the shallows, ducks being ducks. The northern side offers better views back across the water, and there's decent bird-watching potential year-round. The path is well-maintained and manageable for families with kids, though the footing gets muddy after rain, which is half the charm really.

Historically, this was part of the Linacre Estate's water systems - there are three reservoirs here altogether, though the middle one is the main draw. Allow ninety minutes if you're not dawdling, two hours if you want to sit on a bench halfway round and actually notice things.

If you're based at Spire View Yurts just down the road or Poolsbrook Country Park, this makes an excellent morning sortie before heading into Chesterfield proper. It's the kind of spot that locals use without fuss, which is exactly why it works. No visitor centre nonsense, no admission fees - just a lake, a path, and decent air.
