Limpenhoe, Limpenhoe: St Botolph

The church sits alone in the Norfolk marshes, a medieval tower rising out of what feels like the edge of the world. St Botolph's is a proper oddity - built in the 13th century and left largely to itself ever since, with nobody quite sure why it ended up so isolated from the village it's supposed to serve.

What you get is a genuinely atmospheric visit. The exterior is all flint and stone, the kind of solid construction you don't see much anymore. Inside, it's quiet in a way that feels intentional rather than neglected. The nave and chancel are open to visitors, and there's genuine medieval character here - not overdone or fussed with, just a working church that's been going about its business for 800 years.

This isn't a day-trip destination on its own. It's the sort of place you visit because you're walking through the Norfolk countryside or you're curious about obscure medieval churches, not because you've driven from Great Yarmouth specifically to see it. That said, if you're staying at Haven Wild Duck Holiday Park just down the road, it's well worth the short drive out to the marshes. Allow 30 minutes, maybe an hour if you're into church history and want to sit quietly.

Access is straightforward - it's free to enter and there's a small car park nearby. The landscape around it is bleak in the best way, all big skies and water channels. Bring good shoes if you're walking; the marshes don't care about trainers.
