Lime Kiln Wood

Ancient woodland near Ellon that feels properly forgotten, which is exactly why it's worth seeking out. Lime Kiln Wood is a dense patch of old-growth forest where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no car park attendants, just trees and the occasional sound of birds doing their thing.

Walking through here is straightforward enough. The paths are well-defined if you pay attention, winding between gnarled oaks and conifers that have been growing undisturbed for longer than most of us have been alive. There's a genuine sense of stepping back in time, though it's not some Instagram-friendly postcard moment. It's genuinely quiet and a bit moody, especially on overcast days when the light gets properly strange.

Best for anyone who actually enjoys woodland without needing an interpretation board every fifty metres. Families with younger kids might get restless after an hour, but serious walkers and anyone after a bit of peace will find it excellent. The forest floor is soft underfoot after rain, so waterproofs are worth bringing.

If you're basing yourself at Ythan Valley Campsite, this is a decent morning walk to shake off the campsite dust. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slowly and soaking in the atmosphere. There's no admission fee - you just turn up and get on with it. Perfect if you want to feel like you've discovered somewhere that hasn't been entirely colonised by tourism.
