Lilley Copse

A proper woodland walk near Hungerford, Lilley Copse is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a trip around. The trees are thick enough to feel genuinely isolated despite being within easy reach of civilisation - oak, beech and the usual mix you'd expect from Berkshire woodland. Paths wind through without too much faffing about, and it's the kind of forest that actually feels like a forest rather than a managed nature reserve.

The main appeal here is straightforward: if you're staying at nearby Lorne Hill Farm or anywhere in the area and fancy a proper leg-stretch without the crowds you'd get at the bigger attractions, this delivers. The canopy cover makes it decent even when the weather turns drizzly. Kids won't get bored if they're the exploring type, though there's no playground equipment or marked trails with fancy names - it's just trees and quiet.

Allow an hour or so depending on how deep you want to go. No facilities that I'm aware of, so sort yourself out in Hungerford before you head in. Free to access, which is always welcome. It works as a break between park days rather than a destination in itself - exactly what you want when the holiday park routine needs interrupting. The woodland does its job: it's green, it's peaceful, and nobody's trying to sell you anything.
