Lightwood Covert

A proper woodland walk, this one - not the twee interpretive trail kind, but actual forest where you might get your boots muddy and spot something wild. Lightwood Covert sits just outside Bridgnorth and feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from town, which is the mark of a decent wood. The canopy's thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays relatively dry underfoot, and there's real peace here - the sort where you can actually hear yourself think. Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it, maybe more if they're the type to stop and identify every bird call. Older walkers planning to base themselves at somewhere like Wheathill Touring Park will find this a natural half-day loop, easily combined with a pint in Bridgnorth afterwards. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, beech, whatever's managed to seed itself - and there are moments where the light filters through in that gold-and-green way that makes you forget it's the Midlands. No fancy facilities that I could find, no café, no visitor centre. Just trees and paths. That's rather the point. Worth the detour if you're after some proper greenery between your park breaks, though it's not the sort of place where you'll spend a full afternoon unless you're seriously into fungi or bird spotting. Go early weekends for parking.
