Bluebell Woods

The woodland floor turns an unlikely shade of blue for a few weeks each spring, and it's genuinely worth timing a Shropshire break around. Bluebell Woods near Bridgnorth is the sort of place that looks properly magical in photographs - and then you actually turn up and realise the photos don't lie. Thousands of wild bluebells carpet the ground from late April through May, depending on the year and weather.

It's a straightforward walk through mature woodland rather than a manicured attraction. You'll find yourself among proper trees, with the bluebells doing all the heavy lifting visually. Early morning is the call - go late morning and you'll be sharing the path with every other person who had the same idea. The light works better earlier anyway, softer and slanted through the canopy.

Families with young kids tend to get the most from it, partly because bluebells genuinely thrill children, and partly because there's a reasonable walk but not one that demands peak fitness. Keen photographers should bring a tripod and patience. Seasoned woodland walkers might find it a bit of a one-trick season, but those weeks in spring? Absolutely worth it.

There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of - just turn up. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on how many times you stop to stare. Base yourself at Park Grange Holidays or Stanmore Hall Touring Park, both within ten minutes' drive, and you've got a proper spring trip worth planning.
