Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Tayport is doing double duty these days - it's a working navigational aid and a proper gallery space that punches well above its weight. You get the actual tower itself, red and white striped, sitting right on the waterfront where the Tay estuary opens out, and inside they've created exhibition space that showcases local artists and rotating contemporary work.

It's worth allowing a good hour, longer if the current exhibition grabs you. The real pull here isn't trying to climb the tower - you can't - but standing at the base looking across the water toward the Fife coast and then heading inside to see what's on. On a clear day the light's brilliant for photography, which visitors seem to appreciate. History types will get a kick out of the navigational side of things, though don't expect a deep dive into maritime heritage. Families with older kids will find it interesting enough, though younger ones might lose patience quickly.

If you're staying at either Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite - both excellent spots just four miles away - this makes an easy afternoon outing. The town itself is functional rather than charming, all fish and chips and working harbour, which is refreshingly honest. The real value here is as a cultural breather during a park holiday rather than a destination in itself. Check ahead for opening times and entry fees before you visit, as information online is a bit thin. Free or modest admission, I'd wager, but worth confirming.
