Lickfold Roman bath house

You won't find much left standing at Lickfold - a few metres of Roman masonry are all that remain of what was once a proper bath house, likely serving a nearby villa or settlement in Roman Sussex. What you see today is essentially archaeological foundation work: low stone walls, enough to show you where the hot and cold rooms would have been, maybe the hypocaust system if you know what you're looking at.

It's a site for people with genuine interest in Roman Britain rather than casual day-trippers. If you're into archaeology or Roman history, it's worth the detour from Pulborough to understand how the occupation worked at ground level - not armies and emperors, but ordinary people bathing and living. The location itself, in rural Sussex countryside, gives you a real sense of how far Roman infrastructure spread into what we now think of as sleepy southern England.

The practical situation: there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I'm aware of, and no standard opening hours. This is a heritage site you visit by turning up - it's free, which is proper, but you'll need to do your homework first or bring someone who knows Roman settlement patterns. Allow thirty minutes maximum, unless you're taking photographs or sketching.

It works as a half-hour stop if you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Wakestone & Wild or Goweco are both within four miles. Pair it with a walk along the Arun Valley or a visit to Pulborough's riverside walks to make a proper morning of it. Don't expect crowds or facilities. Expect humility in the face of two thousand years.
