The cathedral city of Lichfield doesn't exactly scream 'library visit' when you're planning a caravan holiday in Staffordshire, but that's rather the point. This isn't some grand Victorian reading room or literary pilgrimage site - it's a proper working library that actually tells you something about how people live here now.

You'll find it in the town centre, a functional modern space that's been doing solid service for locals. The main draw for holidaymakers is the local history section, which gives real context to Lichfield's Georgian architecture and Samuel Johnson connections without the pretension. Decent children's area if you need somewhere dry when the rain rolls in - the staff are helpful about pointing families toward age-appropriate stuff, and it's genuinely quiet if you just want to sit with a book for an hour.

Free admission, naturally. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on whether you're just killing time or actually hunting for something specific. Tuesday and Thursday open till six if you're an evening person.

It's only five miles or so from Cannock Chase Camping and Caravanning Club Site, so manageable if you want a rainy-day alternative to the outdoors. Don't come expecting theatre or spectacle - come because you're already in Lichfield exploring the cathedral and Georgian streets, and you'd quite like a cup of tea somewhere warm while you're at it.
