Ley Hill GC

The course sits on chalk downland just outside Chesham, and it's one of those places that feels properly removed from the world even though you're barely 30 miles from London. Ley Hill is a private members' club, so you'll need an invite or a reciprocal arrangement if you're a golfer elsewhere, but it's worth knowing about if you're serious about the game.

What makes it tick is the terrain. The land rolls genuinely - not the manufactured undulation you get on newer courses, but actual working downland that's been shaped into fairways over decades. The greens demand respect. Trees line several holes, and the rough will punish a wayward shot without question. It's not brutally long, but it plays properly.

You're looking at a full round here, so allow four to five hours. The clubhouse has the usual facilities - nothing flashy, but competent. The membership tends to be serious golfers rather than social players, which sets the tone.

If you're staying at Lights Camera Glamping just down the road, and you've managed to sort out a game, you've landed well. The location means you can play in the morning, head back to the site for lunch, and still have the afternoon for walking. Chesham itself has the usual market-town amenities if you need a pint afterward. It's a solid course for those who know their way around a golf bag - don't rock up expecting to find a walk-in friendly venue.
