Ley Hill

The walk up Ley Hill is short and sharp - about twenty minutes from Minehead if you're fit, longer if you're not. It's a proper little climb, the kind that leaves you breathing hard but grinning when you reach the top. The summit itself isn't vast, but the views across Exmoor and down to the Bristol Channel are genuinely worth the effort, especially on clear days when you can see for miles.

This is one for walkers rather than loungers. Kids will manage it fine if they're reasonably active, though younger ones might find the steepness tedious on the way down. History types won't find much archaeology here - it's about the landscape and the air, not the stories. Allow an hour total if you're taking photos and having a breather at the top.

From either the Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead, you're only five to six miles away, making it an easy half-day outing. Pair it with a walk around Minehead itself or a longer ramble across Exmoor if you're staying for a few days. Admission is free - you just show up and climb. Go early morning if you want to avoid other walkers, and bring water because there's nothing up there. On a grey day it can feel a bit bleak, so time it right and it's genuinely rewarding.
