Letter Hill

Letter Hill rises 1,180 feet above Kyle of Lochalsh, and on a clear day the views across the Sound of Sleat towards Skye are genuinely arresting. It's a proper hill walk rather than a gentle stroll - steep in places, boggy in others, and you'll want proper boots. The whole thing takes about two hours there and back if you're not dawdling.

What makes it worthwhile is the perspective you get. From the summit, you're looking directly across at the Cuillin ridge, and on a windless morning the light catches the water in a way that photographs never quite capture. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a bit much, but teenagers and proper walkers will love it. The paths are well-trodden enough to follow, though they're not maintained tarmac - this is genuine Highland terrain.

If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping just down the road, it's an obvious morning jaunt. Leave early to beat any afternoon cloud creeping in - weather changes fast up here. There's no café at the top, no facilities, nothing except grass and views. That's rather the point. The walk sits perfectly within a wider exploration of Kyle of Lochalsh itself and the road towards Glenelg, making it a natural part of a day that includes coastal driving and exploring what's left of the old settlement.
