Leskernick Hill

The walk up Leskernick Hill near Launceston rewards you with one of Cornwall's best views across Bodmin Moor - all granite tors and open moorland stretching to the horizon. It's a proper hike, mind you. The path climbs steeply through heather and gorse, and you'll want decent boots because the ground can be boggy even after decent weather.

Once you're up there, the Bronze Age cairn circle sits in the middle of the plateau like something from another world. Standing stones, Bronze Age hut circles scattered about - it's the kind of place that makes you understand why ancient people chose this spot. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a misty one, which is often, the atmosphere becomes almost eerie.

Allow two hours minimum, longer if you want to explore the archaeological features properly. The walk suits anyone reasonably fit - families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak. Walkers and history types will absolutely get their money's worth here. It's free, naturally.

Leskernick pairs brilliantly with other Bodmin walks - you're basically on the moor's edge. Go in autumn when the heather blooms purple, or early summer when it's drier underfoot. Avoid midwinter unless you enjoy horizontal rain.
