Lennel Hill

The climb up Lennel Hill takes about forty minutes from Coldstream, and it's one of those walks that feels properly rewarding once you're up there. You get proper views across the Borders from the top - the sort of panorama that makes the mild huffing on the way up entirely worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles, which isn't bad for a peak that's not exactly mountainous by Scottish standards.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb, so families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without drama. The path is well-trodden and the gradient, while steady, isn't brutal. Allow a couple of hours there and back if you're not rushing, and take the path that swings up from near the town.

Walkers will appreciate the views across to the English side of the border and back towards the Cheviot Hills. It's the sort of spot where you actually understand why this part of Scotland matters geographically - you're standing on something and looking at the landscape properly. History types will note the ancient fort remains up top, though honestly the views are the main event.
