Leith Plantation

The wooded slopes around Leith Plantation offer proper walking territory just a few miles south of Penrith. It's a working forest rather than a visitor attraction with gift shops and car parks - more of a local spot where you can actually walk without crowds. The plantation itself is a mix of mature conifers and mixed woodland, the kind of place where the light filters through in shafts and the ground is springy underfoot.

This suits walkers far more than casual visitors. You're not coming for ruins or viewpoints or a heritage story. You're coming for a decent couple of hours among the trees, with trails that wind through the forest and enough elevation to feel like proper exercise. The nearest town is Penrith, which means you're close to the Eden Valley but still properly rural.

What makes it work for a park holiday is the location. Howdy Glamping sits just 1.8 miles away - excellent rating - and Crossfells Campsite is barely 2.5 miles further. Both five stars, both proper accommodation. Lowther Holiday Park is also within striking distance at 3.2 miles. So you can base yourself at one of these places and have Leith Plantation as a morning walk before breakfast, or an afternoon ramble if the weather turns decent.

No facilities at the plantation itself that I'm aware of, so bring water and reasonable boots. It's the kind of place that appeals to people who actually want to walk, not snap photos. Families with restless kids might find an hour enough. Proper walkers will manage half a day without complaint.
