Leicester Cathedral

The cathedral sits right in Leicester city centre, a proper medieval affair that's been standing since the 12th century. It's small compared to the grand monsters you'll find in York or Canterbury, but that's rather the point - you can actually take it all in without needing a map and a degree in architecture.

Inside, there's the tomb of Richard III, which caused an absolute stir when they dug him up from a car park in 2012. Bit morbid, but genuinely fascinating if you're into Tudor history. The stained glass is decent, the stonework solid, and if you time it right you might catch evensong - though that depends on the calendar.

Families with teenagers who aren't completely phone-addicted will get something out of it. Younger kids tend to lose interest after ten minutes unless you're prepared to do the whole "spot the gargoyles" game. History buffs, though, should definitely factor in an hour.

Admission's free, which is always welcome. It's a quick visit if you're passing through Leicester anyway, or a decent stop between days at Bradgate Park and Green Acres just outside the city. You won't need to book anything special - just rock up and walk in during opening hours. Not a massive detour if you're staying at Cossiwild Camping either, though the drive in is a bit of a slog through urban sprawl.
