Leeds Castle Culpeper Garden

The Culpeper Garden sits within the grounds of Leeds Castle near Maidstone, and it's one of those spaces that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed tick-off. Named after the Culpeper family who owned the castle centuries ago, it's a proper formal garden with the kind of geometric beds and hedging that makes you feel like you've stepped into a Tudor painting.

What you're actually looking at is around six acres of manicured grounds - topiary, rose beds, and water features that catch the light nicely on a clear day. The castle itself is the real draw for most visitors, but the garden gives you a reason to linger outside and think about how people actually lived in these places. It's the sort of spot where photography types will spend a good hour finding angles, while kids will get restless if you try to explain the historical significance of every clipped hedge.

You'll need to pay for castle admission to access the gardens - they're not separately ticketed - and allow a good two hours if you're going to do both properly. Summer's the obvious choice, though spring bulbs do their thing early on. The glamping at Chegworth Mill is just under a mile away, which makes it sensible if you want the luxury angle on a castle-and-countryside break. Go Glamp is about six miles further out, also solid if you're after something less formal nearby.
