Ledner Sands, Wonwell

The walk down to Ledner Sands takes you through proper Devon countryside before opening onto a beach that feels surprisingly removed from the world, despite being just a few miles from Plymouth. It's a small sandy cove backed by cliffs, the kind of place that rewards those willing to make the effort rather than heading straight for the busier spots.

This is walkers' territory, really. The approach involves a decent trek through fields and a steep descent to the shore, so it's not the spot if you're after an easy stroll with small children in tow. But if you've got capable legs and a couple of hours to spare, you'll find a quieter alternative to the tourist beaches closer to the city. The sands themselves are good for a paddle or a picnic, and at low tide there's proper beach to explore.

Wonwell sits within easy striking distance of some cracking holiday parks. Hidden Hill Devon, just 2.3 miles away, offers proper glamping with hot tubs if you want to keep things comfortable between outdoor adventures. South Devon Camping over at Lower Terawhiti Farm is a bit further at 5.1 miles but still manageable if you're basing yourself locally and want something more low-key.

Go early in the day if you can - it keeps the car park less rammed and the light better for photos if the sky cooperates. It's free to visit and worth the leg work.
