Ledmore & Migdale

Two Iron Age brochs standing on a hillside above Ardgay - that's what Ledmore and Migdale are, and they're proper dramatic when you crest the rise. You get both structures in one trip, which is rare enough to make the walk worthwhile. The ruins themselves are stone circles, honestly nothing more than foundations and a few metres of wall, but the setting lifts them completely. From up there you can see across Strathcarron, and on a clear day it's the sort of view that makes you understand why someone built a settlement here 2,000 years ago.

Historically minded visitors will get the most out of these - they're the kind of spot where an archaeology enthusiast can spend a solid hour puzzling over the stonework and imagining Iron Age life. Kids under ten might find the walk there more interesting than the ruins themselves. Allow an hour return from the road, though fit walkers could knock it out in 40 minutes. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so coming with a decent guidebook helps. Free to visit, naturally.

If you're basing yourself at Ardgay Glamping, these make a straightforward morning outing before exploring the bigger draws of Sutherland. They're not essential - you won't regret missing them - but if you're already in the area and the weather's behaving, the walk pays for itself in views alone.
