Leachonich, Broch

You'll need to hunt a bit to find this one - Leachonich Broch sits in the Highland landscape near Tain, and it's the kind of spot that rewards patience. It's an Iron Age broch, that distinctive Scottish tower structure that locals would have used for defence and shelter, and what remains today is genuinely impressive given its age.

The broch itself is stone - properly ancient stone - rising from the moorland. You can walk right up to it, trace your fingers along the circular walls, and get a real sense of how these Iron Age inhabitants lived. There's something humbling about standing in front of something built two millennia ago with nothing but hand tools and determination.

This isn't a site that requires hours. Thirty minutes to an hour does it - enough to explore the structure, take some photos, and absorb the atmosphere. There's no visitor centre or fancy infrastructure here, which is frankly part of its appeal. It's free to visit, and you won't find crowds queuing up.

History enthusiasts will absolutely get it. Kids might find it less thrilling than a more visitor-friendly site, though older children who like a bit of exploring will enjoy the scramble across moorland to reach it. The nearest town is Tain, which gives you a proper base.

If you're doing a park holiday in the area - Dornoch Firth Caravan Park is just a few miles away - this makes a decent half-morning detour. Pair it with other Highland walks and you've got a proper archaeological trail going. It's not a destination on its own, but it absolutely deserves an afternoon of your time.
