The canopy gets thick enough that you'll need a moment for your eyes to adjust when you step off the main track. There's no car park marked on maps, no facilities, no crowds. Just trees and the occasional sound of water from the streams that cut through.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a loop or a marked trail situation - you pick your way through on a compass bearing or very rough local knowledge. The ground can be boggy in winter, which puts off the casual weekender types, but that's precisely when it's most interesting. Allow anything from an hour to a half day depending on how lost you want to get.

If you're camping at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park six miles south, this works as a proper woodland escape that won't feel like everywhere else. Don't come expecting a café or a viewing platform. Come because you want trees without the Instagram angle. Free, naturally - there's nothing here to charge for. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through differently and the paths show themselves better. Not for families with small kids who need facilities, but dead right for anyone who finds managed parks a bit too tame.
