Lawel Hill

The walk up Lawel Hill rewards you with proper views across Aberdeenshire once you're past the initial grunt. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a substantial hill than a mountain - but the landscape opens up as you climb, and on a clear day you can see why folk from Inverurie come out here to blow away the cobwebs.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The climb takes a couple of hours at an easy pace, nothing technical, just steady legs and decent boots. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the climb a slog without much to see until the summit. In winter it can be boggy and a bit testing underfoot, so spring through autumn is your best bet.

The hill sits close enough to Inverurie that it's an easy morning or afternoon excursion if you're based at Hillhead Caravan Park up the road. You're not battling crowds here - it's working landscape rather than a tourist hotspot, which is partly the appeal. The views back towards the Cairngorms on a sharp day are the real draw, not the summit itself.

Allot three hours return if you're not rushing, bring water, and go when the weather's settled. It's the sort of walk that feels like an honest day out rather than a tick-box peak.
