Launde Big Wood

The woodland at Launde feels properly wild - ancient trees, tangled undergrowth, the sort of place where you actually hear yourself think. It's a nature reserve that rewards slow walking rather than rushing through. You'll find bluebells in spring if you time it right, and in autumn the leaf litter is thick enough that your footsteps disappear.

It's genuinely free, open all hours, so you can slip in early morning or late afternoon without faff.

Lying just outside Leicester's orbit in Rutland, Launde Big Wood works well as a midweek escape from a caravan park base. Emily's Cut Camping sits closest at just over two miles, though the other parks - Hidden Hideaway Glamping, Fox's Furrow, and Greendale Farm - are all within reasonable driving distance. Couple it with other Rutland attractions rather than treating it as a full day on its own.

Allow two to three hours for a proper wander without rushing. Bring decent boots - the ground stays boggy even after dry spells. It's the sort of place that reveals more on a second visit, when you stop looking for landmarks and just listen to what's actually around you.
