Launcherley Hill

The climb up Launcherley Hill rewards you with views across the Mendip plateau that justify the effort. It's a proper Somerset vantage point - from the top you're looking out towards Wells and the surrounding countryside, which on a clear day stretches far enough to remind you why people settled in these valleys centuries ago.

This is walker territory, no question. It's not a casual stroll - you're gaining real height - but it's manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness and decent boots. Most people will allow an hour there and back from the nearest approach, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking your time and stopping to look around. The path can be muddy after rain, which is worth noting.

It works well as part of a wider Mendip ramble. If you're based at one of the local parks - Cathedral View Glamping or Wells Touring Park are closest at just over a mile or two from Wells itself - you can easily combine this with a morning or afternoon exploring the area. Cheddar Camping sits a bit further out but opens up access to Cheddar Gorge if you fancy something more dramatic.

Families with older kids will get something from it. Younger children might find the climb tedious without an incentive at the top, and there's not much to do once you arrive beyond the view itself. History buffs should know this area has Bronze Age connections, though Launcherley itself is more about the walking than the archaeology.

Free to access - there's no gate or entrance fee. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends can get busy with other walkers.
