Latimer Park

The River Chess runs through Latimer Park like a ribbon of proper woodland, and that's really what draws you here - it's a working nature reserve, not some manicured country estate. You'll find yourself walking through beech and oak woodland that feels genuinely wild, with the river doing its thing below. The paths are well-maintained enough that families with younger kids can manage a decent stretch, though it's not a pushchair-friendly stroll.

What makes it worth the trip from Chesham is the sense of actual wildness. Birds here aren't caged or corralled - you might spot wood warblers in spring, or if you're lucky, a kingfisher darting along the water. The reserve is compact enough that you won't spend all day here, which is fine. Most people get a solid hour out of it, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen on spotting things and pottering about. Bring binoculars if you're serious about the birdwatching side.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Whelpley Hill is barely twenty minutes away - this makes a good half-morning activity. Lights Camera Glamping is almost as close, and both give you the flexibility to combine it with woodland walks elsewhere in the Chilterns. The reserve itself is free to access, which is refreshing. Go early for the best wildlife viewing and to avoid any busier afternoon crowds. Autumn and spring are genuinely good times, though winter has its own appeal if you don't mind the chill.
