Larkton Hill

The walk up Larkton Hill is worth doing, even if the summit itself won't set your heart racing. It's a proper little climb from Chester way, offering decent views across the Cheshire plains once you're up there - the kind of spot where you can see for miles on a clear day, which frankly doesn't happen often enough round here. The hill rises to about 900 feet, so it's no Everest, but the approach is pleasant enough if you don't mind a bit of a trudge.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place you'd tack onto a morning hike rather than make a special trip for, unless you're genuinely keen on bagging local peaks. The views justify the effort, particularly toward the Welsh hills on days when the weather actually cooperates. You're looking at a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness and the route you take.

If you're camping nearby - Pitch & Canvas, Manor Wood, or Bradley Hall Rural Escapes are all within spitting distance - this makes a solid addition to a park-based holiday. Pack a packed lunch and you've got a decent morning sorted. Just check the weather first. There's nothing worse than climbing a hill for a view, only to find yourself standing in cloud.
